Dynamic Energy Management System for a Smart Micro-grid

 

There has been immense rise in the interest for harvesting energy from sustainable sources such as wind and solar with declining availability of conventional sources of energy such as oil, natural gas, coal, etc., and modern developments in energy storage systems. The cost of energy generated from renewable energy sources like solar and wind today are competitive with the traditional resources. The purposed smart micro-grid in this project consists of distributed energy resources wind, solar, diesel generator and energy storage. For maximum utilization of renewable energy, conventional priority energy management controllers have been developed which are highly inefficient as they supply the energy demand of all loads (critical and non-critical) without assigning any priority and power up the battery only if more energy is available than load demand. Dynamic energy management system (DEMS) is developed to perform real-time dynamic optimization of energy generated in a micro-grid system through intelligent energy dispatch. With penetration of intermittent sources such as wind and solar, short-term as well as long-term forecasts of these renewable energy resources and load are utmost essential for the realization of DEMS.
